The International Siauliai airport is situated in the Southeastern part of Siauliai in Northern Lithuania. Civil aircraft flights and ground services at the military Siauliai aerodrome are organized by Siauliai municipality owned enterprise Siauliai Airport. The owner and caretaker of this aerodrome is the Military Force of Lithuania. This aerodrome is one of the largest in the Baltic states and has two runways.
Siauliai airport was built before the second World War and was used as the base of military air force of independent Lithuania. After the second World war Siauliai Airport was taken over by The Soviet military air force and it was then that they constructed two parallel 3500 and 3200m. length runways.
After the restoration of independence the aerodrome had to be reconstructed to suit the civil requirements. At the beginning reconstruction ( it was started in 1995) it was decided to make it suitable for international transportation of both cargo and passengers. After two years of construction works carried out by „Philips Projects", the aerodrome was certified as cat.1 by ICAO requirements. New navigation equipment and systems were established and a new Tower for air traffic control and passenger terminal were built.
